One of the most frequent questions asked by hearing loss patients is whether or not they can still do yoga even with the presence of hearing loss and while wearing hearing aids. The short answer is yes. As a matter of fact, studies suggest that practising yoga and other fun activities can improve one’s hearing power.
And so to help take away your apprehensions and push you to go on that mat and start doing yoga, here are a few tips that you can follow.
1. Find the perfect studio
First on the list is to find the perfect studio for you. Probably the most important factor to consider is whether they have already had experience in accommodating students with hearing loss cases. Knowing this can instantly ease your worries. While you’re at it, you can also go ahead and enquire for recommended classes—particularly those that avoid loud music.
2. Never forget to protect your hearing aids
There may be yoga poses that can possibly put your hearing aid at risk of falling. Sweat may also drip off to its body and microphone. Find ways on how you can keep them on your ear and prevent sweat from reaching the most delicate parts of your device. We suggest using a sweatband to hold your hearing aids into place and keep it moisture-free.
3. Settle in the best spot in the room
During class, it’s always best to arrive early so you have all the time to look for the best spot in the room. To do this, we highly recommend placing yourself in the middle of other students. This way, you have the option to watch other yogis at your front, back, left, and right whenever you missed out on hearing instructions from your teacher.
4. Inform the people around you
Feel free to let your teacher, and even your newfound yogi friends, know about your hearing loss situation. Your teacher will appreciate having this information, so he or she can provide necessary assistance in cases when you miss hearing certain instructions during class.
5. Don’t give up and just have fun
It’s normal to have a hard time doing yoga with or without hearing loss. And just like any other physical activities, all it takes is persistence. Try out different classes and yoga styles until you find something that really matches your interests. You’ll be surprised with what you can accomplish when you put your mind and heart into it.
6.Use remote microphone
You could pass the remote microphone to the yoga instructor. The voice from the yoga instructor can be transmitted to the hearing aid directly.
Sadly, most hearing loss patients miss out on a lot of experiences only because of the assumption that their condition is a hindrance to enjoying activities like yoga. However, that should definitely not be the case! You can’t let hearing loss be the reason why you can’t enjoy living life. Follow these tips and start reaping the benefits of doing yoga!
