On the 3rd of August 2024, The Listening Lab, in collaboration with Advanced Bionics (AB), hosted a special event bringing together cochlear implant users and their families for the AB Mentorship Connection Day. This event was more than just a gathering; it was a celebration of community and an essential step toward strengthening the mentorship network for cochlear implant users in Singapore.
Earlier this year, our team discussed the importance of having experienced cochlear implant users serve as mentors to those considering cochlear implants as a path to better hearing. We were pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming response from so many AB users who were eager to volunteer their time to support and guide others, driven by a deep sense of empathy for those on a similar journey. Deeply moved by this outpouring of generosity, we facilitated a gathering of these noble volunteers, providing them with the training and support needed to assist others who are earlier in their path to hearing rehabilitation.
We also brought in experts in the field, Nicole Da Rocha and Janani Jeyaraman, to lead insightful sessions that shared success stories from around the world and underscored the vital role of support within this global network.
A memorable moment of the day was the “Make-Your-Own-Popiah” activity, which fostered bonding and symbolized unity within the mentorship community, reminding us that we are stronger together. What truly stood out was the selflessness of our volunteers. Despite their own challenges and commitments, they stepped forward to give back, asking for nothing in return. We are honored to have them share their personal experiences to help others.
AB Mentorship Connection Day is a testament to the power of community and the incredible impact of selfless acts. It was a day filled with emotion, connection, and a shared commitment to improving the lives of others through better hearing.
We are immensely thankful to the volunteers—together, let us continue making a difference for better hearing.
