Hey, that’s already a huge advantage to the female population! But did you know, research also suggests that women tend to have better hearing health? For one, women are more likely to consider getting hearing aids, when in fact, men are five times more prone to develop hearing loss than women. Why is this so? Is it natural and in their biology? Do women have an extra filter in their ears?
It’s in the workplace
Hearing loss has nothing to do with how a human body is made up, but rather, with the environment that one is usually surrounded with. Oftentimes, hearing loss develops from the workplace. The hearing loss resulting from the noise that is heard in a prolonged duration is what we call noise-induced hearing loss. Males have the higher tendency to take jobs that are situated in noisy workplaces such as construction and manufacturing sites, carpentry, police work, and the like. They are also most likely to serve in the military, which uses equipment that produce great sound. This makes the male population more prone to developing hearing loss.
Use of analgesics
Studies have shown that men are more likely to use pain relief medication, also known as analgesics. Analgesics are a type of drug. Examples of this include aspirin, acetaminophen, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It has been concluded that continuous use of these can increase the risk of hearing loss.
Women are more open about the topic
Women find it easier to acknowledge it when they find out that they are experiencing a deterioration in their hearing. Women are also more likely to find ways to foster better communication. Women with hearing loss would often ask the person they are talking to, to speak in the direction of their “good ear”. Men, on the other hand, have a tendency to keep quiet about their condition and often do not take note of ways to cope until their condition is severe.
Another difference between the two are the following – Women will try to fix the situation instead of the condition. Women are more likely to use hearing aids, even when their hearing loss is not that severe. When advised to wear a hearing aid, women are more likely to follow the advice as compared to men. Women are also more likely to explain the condition of their hearing impairment to loved ones, while men are more likely to keep it to themselves. Women show their emotions more easily and can maintain better eye contact with whom they are talking to, as compared to men. Women also use more body language, facial expressions and gestures, and these help to facilitate communication with other people better.
How it develops
Hearing loss develops differently between men and women. Women are unable to hear low-frequency sounds before high frequency ones. This is the opposite for men. Women have more trouble listening to vowels while men have a harder time with consonants. When you are unable to hear high frequency sounds, it affects speech recognition greatly.
