Reasons Why You Can’t Hear with Your Hearing Aid

When you are unable to hear from your hearing aid, regardless of the type, you wonder what could have gone wrong. To give light to that uncertain scenario, we collected the likely reasons. Here are a few reasons on why you don’t hear properly from your hearing devices.

1. Impacted ear wax

Earwax has been known as being helpful in keeping our ears lubricated. It also functions by getting the dust, dirt, excess skin, hair, and the like and constantly removes them naturally. However, there may come a time that it becomes pressed firmly on either your hearing aids or your ears.

It is true that people have different earwax production. Some people would tend to produce so much that their ear canals are full of it that it affects their hearing. It is suggested that impacted ear wax is removed professionally.

Furthermore, earwax may find itself getting into the small places of your hearing aid. It may get into the receiver and block sounds from entering into the ear. You may opt to clean it yourself, but it is best suggested that you have it professionally cleaned as well. The intricate and tiny parts of the hearing aid are very fragile and you, instead of cleaning it, may damage its parts instead.

2. All juiced up battery

Think of your hearing aids as your smartphone. If it is running on low battery, it would not function effectively. Learn to take care of your device’s batteries. Take them out at night when you are not using them to allow moisture to be released. Also remember that batteries have their own lifespan and if your batteries have exceeded theirs, it is time to change them.

3. Hearing aids are old

When we get old, our body doesn’t function the way it used to when we were young. Our eyesight becomes blurred. Our bones become fragile. We also tend to become more forgetful. Similarly, our hearing aids would lose the best of its functionality when it gets old. Switch to a new pair if this is your case. You might even discover a new kind of technology that science and companies have already incorporated in hearing aids that you may find very useful for you.

4. Hearing aids are damaged

Did you accidentally drop your hearing aids? Did your lovely dog chew it? Did you attempt to clean it on your own? There are many several reasons on why hearing aids may become damaged. You can go for a consultation with your ear specialist and let them see your device. Just be prepared to have it repaired if things come to worse.

5. Your hearing has changed

Another reason why you can’t hear with your hearing aids is just simply your hearing has changed. You may want to pay your hearing specialist a visit again and get a checkup. Have yourself tested again and see if your hearing has indeed changed.

6. Wear and tear

That is to say the more you wear them, the more tear it acquires. Hearing aids are made of electronic components just like the many hi-tech gadgets you see around you and will deteriorate over time. It’s one of the reasons why you don’t get to hear so well with your hearing aids after some time.

I started experiencing loss of hearing sometimes in 2010 (41 years old) owing to some medical issue. I was having difficulties hearing conservation especially in meeting. Thus, giving me the fear in attending meeting.

Initially I started with Phonak hearing aid. It helps amplified the sound and I could hear better then. Somehow, my hearing loss deteriorated further that in late 2012 (43 years old), there was profound loss of hearing on my right ear. Even digital hearing aid could not help. On my left ear there is still about 50% to 60% hearing with hearing aid. I was lost at this point of time. I was considering learning sign language. I went to see my ENT specialist and my audiologist Mr. Bala advised me to go for an CI as an alternative to my hearing loss.

I also thank God for Engineer and Scientist, giving them the knowledge to create such a complex and sophisticate device to help those with hearing loss like me. It will be all perfect if the cost is affordable too.
