Why is it better without hearing aids while sleeping?
Feedback from your device leading to sleep deprivation
Leaving your hearing aid on may pick up sounds from your microphone and disrupt your sleep, including scratching on the pillow resulting in feedback such as whistling or higher pitch frequencies. These disruptive sounds often jar you from sleep, and you will get restless nights.
You may experience reduced alertness, increased blood pressure, diabetes, and other health concerns. Sleep deprivation is also the leading cause of vehicular accidents.
Damage to the hearing aid
There is a high risk that your earpiece will be damaged because your hearing aid may fall off your side while sleeping, or you might put pressure on your ear from the weight of your head on your pillow.
Discomfort during sleep
Some customised hearing aids are made of titanium, silicon, and acrylic. You may hurt your ear once they are pressed too hard. There’s also a possibility of ear wax accumulation during sleep. Your earwax can’t gravitate out of your ears if blocked.
Proper hearing aid care
Sometimes, you may forget to take off your hearing aid but always remember to take it off before swimming, showering, or sleeping at night. Always remember to do the following to lengthen your hearing aid life:
- Store them in proper storage containers or cases.
- Check for signs of wear and tear.
- Keep them away from falling off.
- Turn your hearing aids off after taking them out.
We do not recommend sleeping with hearing aids as much as possible; we advise our patients to get as much rest as possible. You may contact us if you still have a hard time hearing despite having hearing aids on.
