How to Protect Your Ears While Enjoying Music

Problem with your hearing? Visit any of our branches for hearing test and hearing aids recommendation.

Remember back in the days when we had to carry bulky devices and discs just so we could listen to music? The generation today probably don’t. They might not even know what a walkman or cassette is. They grew up in the generation of Youtube and Spotify, which has both made listening to music very easy. We’ve gone a long way in this journey of listening to music. Do you know your basic music history?

Thomas Edison. It was Thomas Edison who invented a device that could record and play music. In 1877, the phonograph was born. However, it lasted only for one play.

Graphophone. This device used wax cylinders that could be played many times but since each cylinder had to be recorded separately, the mass production of these were very difficult.

Gramophone. This was the first device that used a flat disc or record. Since there was no electricity back then, you had to wind it up to use it. Later on, it went from glass records to vinyl plastics.

Cassette tapes. These are devices that were used to record and listen to music. It had a magnetic tape and once you were done listening to it, you had to flip it so you could listen to more songs.

Sony Walkman. This is a personal cassette player created in 1979. It went from personal cassette players to personal audio/video mp3 players in its run.

CDs. Along with CD players, this device was great because you could directly skip to the song that you want to listen, unlike with a cassette wherein you had to manually turn the magnetic tape.

iPod. This device had 100 songs in one go. It later developed to being able to connect to Wi-Fi. Its memory capacity increased over the years.

Download and stream. Today, you can listen and download, or stream music in an instant. Major streaming sites include Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal.

The evolution of music listening devices have definitely been an amazing one. We went from bulky, one-time listening, to compact, handy, and on-the-go devices. Who knows what the future is for music? The possibilities are exciting. It just goes to show that music has been in the world since man can remember.

However though, the continuous development of the industry has also exposed us to more risks of hearing loss. Anyone can get it anytime, no matter how long and loud one wants it to be. But the thing is, excessive exposure to loud music can ultimately lead to hearing loss. And so it is important to remember that while we can freely enjoy listening to music, we should always set a healthy limit as to not destroy our hearing. With that, here are few tips on how you can protect your hearing and still be able to enjoy portable music.

Practice the 60/60 rule. When listening through your earphones, never go beyond the 60% mark. Also, take a breather every 60 minutes of continuous listening.

Turn it down a bit. If people around you can hear the music even though you’re wearing earphones, the volume is too high and it’s time to decrease it already.

Get tested. Playing a very crucial role in our daily lives, it is only best that we also take care of our ears the way we take care of the other parts of our body

JonathanPo-Testimonial
I started experiencing loss of hearing sometimes in 2010 (41 years old) owing to some medical issue. I was having difficulties hearing conservation especially in meeting. Thus, giving me the fear in attending meeting.

Initially I started with Phonak hearing aid. It helps amplified the sound and I could hear better then. Somehow, my hearing loss deteriorated further that in late 2012 (43 years old), there was profound loss of hearing on my right ear. Even digital hearing aid could not help. On my left ear there is still about 50% to 60% hearing with hearing aid. I was lost at this point of time. I was considering learning sign language. I went to see my ENT specialist and my audiologist Mr. Bala advised me to go for an CI as an alternative to my hearing loss.

I also thank God for Engineer and Scientist, giving them the knowledge to create such a complex and sophisticate device to help those with hearing loss like me. It will be all perfect if the cost is affordable too.

TitusPang-Testimonial
Titus was implanted when he was 18 months old. He is a happy, talkative 6.5 years old now. AB has been with him for 5 wonderful hearing years and we are looking forward to a bright future that lies ahead for him. AB’s Naída CI sound processors are reliable and the technology is constantly evolving and upgrading. When Titus was introduced to Naida Link CROS, his life was enriched. The wireless network established between his Naida CI sound processor and a Naida Link CROS transmitter allows him to hear from both ears. This changes Titus’s life and the way we interact with him. We are also very pleased with the prompt response and service provided to us. The staff in AB genuinely cares! We want to thank AB for making Titus’s hearing journey an enjoyable and a relatively stress free one!

I have been living with progressive hearing loss for more than three decades. Socially, I find myself fearful of communicating with people and at home, watching 'soundless' television programs is a norm.

An unforgettable experience. Trying on a pair of Resound GN hearing aid, I was energized and revitalized and overwhelmed with emotional tears of joy. The Resound GN is truly remarkable and uniquely equipped with three-friendly-user environmental modes that provide hearing comfort wherever we are.

In particular, I like to extend my utmost gratitude to Hearing Consultant. With her profound compassion and wisdom in guiding me, I am confident that I can forge a formidable partnership with the Listening Lab; So that I can rebuild a new chapter of a happy and value-creative life and simultaneously, leaving behind the painful memories of the past three decades.
