And now that you are relying so much on it in order to receive quality sounds, it is just important that you do proper hearing aid maintenance. Because you’ve spent not only your hard earned money, but also your effort in order to take ahold of this device, our goal is for you to be able to maximise its usage for as long as you can.
Here’s a comprehensive guide to taking proper care of your hearing aid.
1. Protect from moisture
Avoid using your hearing aid during activities that might expose it to moisture or water in general — taking a bath, swimming, or spraying hairspray. Moisture can cause possible damage to your device. And although tons of hearing aids nowadays are made to be water resistant, it is still recommended that you keep away from contact with water to protect the intricate parts inside. If you face such a situation, dry immediately with a soft towel. Never use a blower as this may damage the device further by pushing the moisture deeper within, plus exposing the hearing aid to high heat.
2. Keep away from heat
When using or keeping your hearing aid, avoid contact with extreme heat as it can damage your device. Remember not to leave your hearing aid in the compartment of your car, especially when parking in an open area. Do not wear it while blow drying your hair. Do not leave it in direct sunlight.
3. Change the battery regularly
Don’t let empty batteries sit in your device for a long time. If you do, moisture can build up, damaging the battery and in turn, the device itself. Remember to change your battery regularly and take them out when you don’t plan on using it for a long time. If you want to lengthen the battery life of your hearing aid, a tip is to leave the battery door open at night when not in use. Doing this facilitates airflow, which preserves the life of your battery.
4. Clean it often
Earwax is almost always the main culprit for hearing aid damage. But as much as we want to, we cannot completely protect your hearing aid from earwax buildup. The best you can do is to make an effort to clean your device frequently. Use a cotton swab, a soft-bristled toothbrush, cloth, or tissue to wipe away earwax debris from your hearing aid receiver and microphone. Do this gently as to not push the wax deeper into your device.
5. Keep it in a safe space
Hearing aids get tinier as the technology progresses. And while it’s becoming easier to carry around on the ear, it’s getting harder to keep it away from threats of damage. If not in use, make a habit of putting your device in a container. Especially at night, there are dehumidifiers available around where you can store it safely. This works on keeping your hearing aid dry, hiding it from pets and children, and preventing misplacement or any physical damage.
6. Regular maintenance
Bring your hearing device regularly back to your hearing centre for a spruce and clean up! The Listening Lab utilises specialised tools and machines to keep your hearing devices dirt-free, wax-free, sanitized and moisture free. These services are provided free to hearing aids purchased from them and such a habit can keep your hearing aids functioning optimally and keep them working for a longer period of time.
These tips go hand in hand with each other towards enabling a long, useful relationship with your hearing aid. Keep in mind that it’s always so much better to take preventive maintenance than going through the hassle of having your device repaired.
