Hearing Aid Advice and Fitting: Understanding the Hearing Aid Fitting Process

Proper hearing aid fitting is essential for achieving the best possible hearing experience. The right fit ensures that your hearing aids are comfortable, deliver excellent sound quality, and ultimately, provide overall satisfaction. This guide will take you through the steps typically involved in the hearing aid fitting process, explaining the importance of personalisation and what you can expect during your fitting appointment.

Why Personalisation Matters

Personalisation is key to a successful hearing aid fitting. Each individual’s hearing loss is unique, and a tailored fitting ensures that the hearing aids address your specific needs. A personalised fitting improves speech understanding, making conversations clearer and more enjoyable. It also enhances comfort, allowing you to wear your hearing aids for extended periods without discomfort.

When hearing aids are customised to your unique hearing profile, they can adapt to different listening environments, whether you’re in a quiet room or a noisy restaurant. This adaptability ensures a seamless hearing experience across various settings. Moreover, it enhances your overall experience, making the hearing aids easier to use and more effective in improving your hearing.

Understanding the Hearing Aid Fitting Process

The hearing aid fitting process involves several critical steps designed to ensure that your hearing aids are perfectly tailored to your needs. The procedure begins with a thorough audiometric test, which assesses your hearing abilities across various frequencies and sound levels. This test helps the audiologist understand your hearing loss pattern and identify the areas that need amplification.

Advanced technology plays a significant role in the customisation of hearing aids. Modern hearing aids come equipped with sophisticated features that allow for precise adjustments based on your audiogram. These technologies ensure that the hearing aids deliver the best possible sound experience, tailored specifically to your hearing loss profile. Customisation involves fine-tuning the settings of the hearing aids to match your hearing needs, providing clarity and comfort in different listening situations.

Brand-Specific Technologies in Hearing Aid Fitting

Different hearing aid brands offer different technologies that can enhance your overall hearing experience. Pay attention to these features during the hearing aid fitting process so you can better consider what suits your needs best:

  • Phonak: Phonak hearing aids’ AutoSense OS technology is designed to adapt automatically to various sound environments, providing seamless transitions and optimal sound quality without the need for manual adjustments. During your fitting, the audiologist will illustrate how AutoSense OS works and fine-tune the hearing aids accordingly. Throughout your trial, pay attention to whether your hearing aids adjust to different settings, such as moving from a quiet room to a noisy area, and ensure that the transitions are smooth and the sound remains clear and comfortable.
  • ReSound: ReSound hearing aids emphasise connectivity, integrating their hearing aids seamlessly with smartphones and other digital devices. This feature allows you to control your hearing aids and stream audio directly from your devices. During the fitting session, ensure that you can manage the settings effortlessly to enjoy clear, uninterrupted sound from your digital devices.
  • Widex: Widex hearind aids focus on delivering a rich, natural sound tailored to your specific hearing loss profile. Their advanced technology captures a full spectrum of sounds, ensuring clarity and balance. In the fitting process, the audiologist will fine-tune these settings to match your hearing needs precisely. Throughout the trial period, test how well the hearing aids reproduce different types of sounds – from high-pitched voices to low-frequency background noises – and make sure the sound feels natural and immersive. Check for the ability to hear subtle nuances in conversations and ambient sounds, ensuring a balanced auditory experience.

What to Expect During a Hearing Aid Fitting Appointment

A hearing aid fitting appointment is a comprehensive process that ensures your hearing aids are perfectly suited to your needs. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Initial Assessment and Hearing Test: The audiologist will review your hearing test results and discuss your hearing needs and lifestyle. This conversation helps in selecting the right hearing aids for you. The initial consultation involves pure tones and speech tests to determine your hearing abilities across different frequencies.
  2. Fitting and Customisation: The audiologist will programme the hearing aids using specialised software, customising the settings based on your audiogram. This step ensures that the devices provide the correct amplification for your hearing loss. The physical fit of the hearing aids is also crucial for comfort and effectiveness. The audiologist will make sure the devices fit snugly and comfortably in your ears, making any necessary adjustments.
  3. Sound Quality Check: The audiologist will test the hearing aids to ensure they provide clear and natural sound. This involves fine-tuning the settings to match your preferences and addressing any issues such as feedback or distortion.
  4. User Education: You will receive guidance on how to use and care for your hearing aids. This includes instructions on inserting and removing the devices, cleaning and maintenance, and changing batteries.
  5. Follow-Up Appointments: Regular follow-up visits are essential to fine-tune the settings and address any issues you may encounter. These appointments ensure that your hearing aids continue to meet your needs as you adjust to using them.

Maximising Your Hearing Aid Experience

To get the most out of your hearing aids post-fitting, follow these tips:

  • Maintenance and Care: Regularly clean your hearing aids and replace the batteries as needed. Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your devices. Cleaning your hearing aids involves gently wiping them with a soft, dry cloth and using a small brush to remove any debris from the microphone and receiver openings.
  • Adapting to Different Environments: Wear your hearing aids in different environments to get used to them. Start in quiet settings and gradually move to noisier environments. This practice helps you adjust to various soundscapes and improves your overall hearing experience. It’s important to be patient during this adjustment period, as your brain needs time to acclimate to the new sounds.
  • Seek Adjustments: If you encounter any issues or discomfort, don’t hesitate to contact your audiologist. Regular adjustments and fine-tuning are part of the process to ensure optimal performance and comfort. Your audiologist can make necessary changes to the settings to enhance your hearing experience and address any specific concerns you may have.

JonathanPo-Testimonial
I started experiencing loss of hearing sometimes in 2010 (41 years old) owing to some medical issue. I was having difficulties hearing conservation especially in meeting. Thus, giving me the fear in attending meeting.

Initially I started with Phonak hearing aid. It helps amplified the sound and I could hear better then. Somehow, my hearing loss deteriorated further that in late 2012 (43 years old), there was profound loss of hearing on my right ear. Even digital hearing aid could not help. On my left ear there is still about 50% to 60% hearing with hearing aid. I was lost at this point of time. I was considering learning sign language. I went to see my ENT specialist and my audiologist Mr. Bala advised me to go for an CI as an alternative to my hearing loss.

I also thank God for Engineer and Scientist, giving them the knowledge to create such a complex and sophisticate device to help those with hearing loss like me. It will be all perfect if the cost is affordable too.

TitusPang-Testimonial
Titus was implanted when he was 18 months old. He is a happy, talkative 6.5 years old now. AB has been with him for 5 wonderful hearing years and we are looking forward to a bright future that lies ahead for him. AB’s Naída CI sound processors are reliable and the technology is constantly evolving and upgrading. When Titus was introduced to Naida Link CROS, his life was enriched. The wireless network established between his Naida CI sound processor and a Naida Link CROS transmitter allows him to hear from both ears. This changes Titus’s life and the way we interact with him. We are also very pleased with the prompt response and service provided to us. The staff in AB genuinely cares! We want to thank AB for making Titus’s hearing journey an enjoyable and a relatively stress free one!

I have been living with progressive hearing loss for more than three decades. Socially, I find myself fearful of communicating with people and at home, watching 'soundless' television programs is a norm.

An unforgettable experience. Trying on a pair of Resound GN hearing aid, I was energized and revitalized and overwhelmed with emotional tears of joy. The Resound GN is truly remarkable and uniquely equipped with three-friendly-user environmental modes that provide hearing comfort wherever we are.

In particular, I like to extend my utmost gratitude to Hearing Consultant. With her profound compassion and wisdom in guiding me, I am confident that I can forge a formidable partnership with the Listening Lab; So that I can rebuild a new chapter of a happy and value-creative life and simultaneously, leaving behind the painful memories of the past three decades.
